One man show here so I buy all the parts, organize all the parts and nobody else messes with my system so this may not apply to your needs.

I used to keep a clipboard and empty box. When items were taken off the shelf of my inventory I would write down and place the tag or part number on a piece of paper in the box.

End of year made for a nice way to know all the items used to prepare parts orders during sales or discounts.

Have since resorted to a dry erase whiteboard where I can write part numbers down as they are used to keep track of inventory.
