Subject: How to plan for 2025

NC Iowa
For the core of the corn belt, harvest is just about over and tillage with fall fertilizer of P an K has begun with N to follow as soil temperatures decline below 50.
Some of you have been contacted by a seed salesman by now or will be soon. Seed selection is always important and 2025 potential weather patterns could make it even more so.

You may think, ok Dan, what's the sales pitch this time? No sales pitch, just some questions for everyone. Do you know the male and female genetics of the corn you are planting? Do you know which hybrids from which companies tend to need late season nitrogen to finish. Do you know which are K responsive and struggle in a dry weather patten? Do you know which tolerate heat waves and which handle cool, wet conditions.

I have spent 45 years as an agronomist taking notes, photos and video comparing hybrids from seed companies. In 1988, 1983, 2012 and 2020 dry weather patterns there were 30-40 bu/a differences between hybrids depending on inbreds used. IF we are headed to that type of weather pattern next year, there are steps you can take to prepare, beginning with hybrid selection.
