Subject: Expansion/family

Currently have around 100 cows, have a lease farm coming available that will hold about 55-60 cows comfortably. Fairly close to home farm, but far enough away that I would want to leave a tractor there full time during the winter for feeding/chores etc. I currently have enough loader tractors to send one there for the winter and not disrupt the current day to day operations.

My dilemma is with my parents. They are in an extremely comfortable financial position. I started from scratch, no financial assistance from them, lease farm came available two years after I got started. I couldn’t swing it financially at the time to take it so I offered my parents to take it to get it tied up and give them a start. 6 years and 60 cows later they have accumulated a hay tetter. 100 percent of the equipment I have bought, 100 percent of the repairs I’ve done or paid for. They literally won’t even buy a pickup, they use mine. Mineral, feed, baler twine etc I order by the pallet and somehow it gets used at their place.

They are great people, definitely don’t want to ruin the relationship. But I have a family of my own to take care of without subsidizing my parents. Just frustrating burning up hours on equipment all summer and then all winter at there place. I want to grow and expand but feel like I have a boat anchor tied to me, my equipment wears out faster than I can afford to replace it.

I’ve tried to be subtle about them getting their own stuff, especially now that their cattle are paid off and I still like a couple years on mine. Anybody been in this situation and is it even possible to resolve it without making a huge mess.
