Subject: RE: corn on corn

Nevada, Iowa
Hybrids have changed but anytime I have had to used spring tillage for corn on corn it has always been a less than desirable result when compared to fall tillage. We have some fairly heavy soil here and unless we get an unusually early and dry start to fieldwork, heavy spring tillage is a recipe for disappointment. If I had a field of heavy residue with no fall work and it were the 10th of April and cold and damp (normal) and I would always rather plant beans. Some kind of shallow strip till may work but there is no way I would figure on chiseling it and ending up with good yields. The odds are just against it, here.
