Happy to have you in the drone club! :)
To use your phone you might have to take off the otterbox case when you want to fly, or use a regular 3' cord and set the phone on your lap. like you said, a tablet works great for flying a drone because you can see so much better and it uses the same DJI app off of the app store that you use on your phone.
