The great depression was caused by misguided Federal Reserve policy. They kept printing money, which naturally flowed to the stock market. When inflation kicked in, the market crashed causing the loss of equity, runs on banks, and the resulting depression. Anything sound familiar? Smoot Hawley was a scape goat.
