Subject: RE: Cat 3208 stalls out under load at idle

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

dondozer - 4/12/2022 09:02 We had a 3208 Cat in a Chevy dump truck in the 90's at work, this was way before I had my 3208 Cat in my L8000. It had trouble like yours, anyway we took it to a Cat dealership in Toledo, Oh. When it runs and warmed up, it run perfect, no miss, no low power. Next morning, same darn thing. Service manager knew exactly what was bad, said not the pressure side of system, that system either it runs or never runs. Was only a seal in the lift pump section of the injector pump, sucking air. They fixed it, and run fine for at least 15 years after that. Point is they only fixed what was needed, not the complete change out, rebuild of the injector pump. Seems now they don't want to look for the simple things, just rebuild pump from factory.

Don, I read your story; and in my opinion, they "probably" also replaced the throttle shaft rubber lip seal, at the same time. {WHY? because to change the lip seals for that front transfer pump, the injection pump/governor, would have been removed from engine, already AND the rear governor housing, needs to be removed so a mechanic can install a long bolt or type of tooling to "Hold the fuel injection pump CAM forward, during the 3208 fuel transfer seal repair } If you don't do this, then there is a very, very, very good chance you will allow the tang of the fuel injection pump camshaft's thrust bearing, to "fall out" of its groove, in the cast housing.

Now, if the rear governor housing is already OFF, you have only one small bolt to remove, pop out the throttle shaft's rubber lip seal (known for allowing air into governor/injection pump area, when they get weak and older) and replace that inexpensive rubber lip seal, for the throttle shaft, AT THE SAME TIME. Any decent CAT mechanic, with any knowledge of a CAT 3208 injection pump and governor, would do this, without hesitation.[cheap, fast, and using common-sense]

My guess, is they did both (transfer pump seals, AND throttle shaft seal, too) during your repair.
