Subject: RE: data collection and veris machines

Northwest Ohio

We bought & started using our 1st Veris coulter cart in the late 1990's. We went thru 3 carts since then. The EC readings have a direct correlation to CEC & OM. The data collection goes seamlessly as long as you have good GPS. In my area most fields have 2-3 soil types. We take the numbers and divide them into 1/3's & create management zones (light, medium, heavy). When soil testing we collect cores from each zone & send in 3 bags. EC mapping having a direct correlation to CEC OM, will help to define where your soil types lay & change. It makes more sense than any size grid. We see a good correlation to a yield map when comparing how the zones lay. We have never had a Veris cart that could collect pH on the go. I hear they work well. When we map fields in my trade area we drive fields every 50' & collect data. As far as soil moisture effecting the numbers, yes it will. We found if you break up the numbers collected, using the same method, you get the same zones / map. I feel good coulter contact is more important than soil moisture. We never run a field that was worked recently, for this reason. I have used, tried every method there is, in soil sampling & creating zones. Next to multiple years of good yield data, Veris EC mapping & zone creation is the best. Another good point about EC mapping, you only have to do it one time, as the CEC & OM numbers change very little over time. Any change will still give you the same map as it will be relative across the fields & soil types.
