Lapel, In | "Hard Times ", a collection of interviews of those who lived through some of the nation's darkest days, written by Studds Terkel, is a a great read to get a feel for what the country could be like shortly.
You could do like I did about 20 years ago. I went to the local library and checked out and read every book on economics and the history of economics,.including Keynes.Must have been about 30 books in all. Read every night,many times well up into the night, but read them all before spring came. Some facinating reading and one of the best winters I ever spent.
If you can still find it, "How To Prepare For The Coming Crash" by Robert Prescott is a good how to prepare book. Probably needs updated now.Think I read that back in the 70s
