We have a grain elevator because my dad built it in the 1980's. There is work to maintaining a elevator, and due dilligence in inspecting bins year round.
Some years I am sure the costs for repairs/maintenance are the same as elevator storage fees.
On the other hand once you have an elevator you do things as you please. No line ups, some control of drying costs etc.
In 2006 after selling corn for 2 years well below the cost of production., we got mad. As it appeared to be another losing year. So we decided to double our storage capacity, and not sell half our production in the fall.
Then ethanol hit, and all the corn we would have had to sell for $2.50/bu or less, went for over a dollar more in the spring/summer of 2007.
However timing is everything when to build/expand. I consider we had some luck involved in the way things turned out!
