| Hello Everyone, Brand new to the forum.
What is the rated capacity of the John Deere 943 wagon running gear? Also, am I damaging an antique if I modify it?
I purchased the running gear without wheels at an auction for $200. Other than a bent 'stretcher pipe' between the two axle sections its in pretty good shape. I went looking for rims and tires for it and ran into sticker shock! We have no tractor salvage yards and the used Ag implement market here is very small (more luck than organized). Rims shipped to Alaska were $300 each and tires were about $150 each. So my bargain running gear will be around $2,000 by the time I replace the 50 year old bearings.
A posting on this forum said the 943 running gear is rated for 3 tons, so I was considering having my local welding shop cut the existing spindles off and replacing them with 1,750 lb trailer spindles that match a 5 bolt 4-1/2 standard trailer wheel. I can find these 5 bolt trailer wheels all over Alaska but not the 6 bolt Ag wheels. If the 943 is rated for more than 3 tons I may spring for the extra money and build the wagon to a higher capacity.
If I do this I'll be glad to give the original hubs to anyone that wants to pick them up. What a great excuse to come to Alaska...
Thanks in advance | |
