The Current land base for food production in the US is about 380 some mln acres... out of a total Land base of something like 2,100 mln acres or about 18%

There is lots of room for "waste material" to be converted to energy without harming the environment or other issues... waste forestry material... landfill material.. as well as existing crop residues.. etc. It won't solve 100% of our liquid fuel energy needs.. but along with others.. wind, solar, nuclear, clean coal, and petroleum as well as new technology.
