Subject: silage ?

mid minnesota
My son and I were at a answer plot at the coop today and he wants to get into milking cows in the future. I dont know alot about silage because I was too young when dad did milk. I know things have changed but some of the stuff about blew my mind! I have a fatherinlaw that only chopped the poor corn like headland and drowned and dryed out hills he considered it free because it would not make corn anyway.(Dumb it still cost to plant but that was his thought) Also they said that good silage should be oderless? I thought silage should smell good and sweet? Told my son maybe they said it should not stink . Help me out on this one One more thing the coop had tropical corn it was 158 day corn. The stuff was 12 ft to 14 tall and a stalk so big you could not get your fingers around but no cob yet
