I used to have this problem until I switched to white Ikea cloths. Once I have a few dirty ones I soak them overnight in water and add a few tablespoons of bleach and then throw them in the wash on a hot water cycle. I believe the smell is bacteria and the only way to get rid of it is either bleach or a really hot wash cycle (not mixed with other clothes, just alone). My boyfriend also likes to pour the leftover hot kettle water over the dishcloths to disinfect them which works great if you run the kettle often!
