The John Deere digger you saw was the predessor to the 4310. It was model 4300. You are correct that it used an auger for elevation. The machine was plagued with problems, most significantly the auger plugging with mud. JD replaced it with the 4310 after only 4 years and even retrofitted some machines in the field with "the wheel".
