When I built my splitter, I did pretty much what you said. Had some old units, disassembled them completely, cleaned them, them primed and painted. I did use JD paint. Didn't do the boxes at that time, but this spring I sanded a couple, and hit them with some yellow paint, turned out ok. Probably do them all when I get time.
