Macon, IL | I have had pretty good luck with 100% no-till continuous corn. Several people told me it can't be done. Have 1 field going into 5th year. Residue wasn't bad 2nd year-just ran down the old rows but yeilds took a big hit. I think too much N was tied up. 3rd year the yeild came back up but residue was a problem. 4th year residue looked BAD and I thougth it was going to be a disaster-but ended up being the best corn I ever had by 20 bushel. This 5th year I was amazed, had way less residue than 3rd or 4th year.
Have a friend who farms several thousand acres of continuous corn here in CIL. He was 100% no till for a lot of years-but is always trying new things. They tried a Phoenix Harrow, then a shallow run turbo till. Now they are stripping a lot of acres with Anhydrous in the fall and running a Salford on others in the spring. Still using it so they must like it.
I think their preferred method is fall strip with the bar.
Could be differnet depending on soil types, which dries faster etc.
