Subject: Ford 302 Pinging Issue

Schomberg, Ontario, Canada
My 1996 F150 with a 302 keeps pinging under load, and has never done this before. When I put premium gas in it, the problem virtually goes away, but I don't want to have to run that in it forever! I took it to the repair shop, and asked them to check the timing, but all they said was it was running lean (no kidding), and they cleaned the 'upper throttle body intake' and said I was good to go. Leaving the shop the truck seemed to have a bit more kick to it, but it is back to pinging again. It will always do it when the truck is just about to drop out of overdrive into drive. Any thoughts before I give a garage all of my money? Thanks!
