Hazelton, Kansas | Cowhater:
I had trouble with the original 4 coil closing wheel springs on my 1860, so I replaced them all with 5 coils and haven't broken one since.
You mentioned "new blades," but I have noticed a big difference in the edge on new blades. Some manufacturers intentionally sell new blades with dull edges. I'm not sure why, but I suspect they are trying to reduce injuries to the people that handle them in the supply chain. Several years ago, I put on a new set of blades that hairpinned badly from day one. I've tried several brands, and I like the CNH blade (which is made by Ingersol) best so far. I've also tried sharpening the blades with an angle grinder, and I didn't have enough patience (or grinder wheels) for that.
Regards.
