Shaftsbury, Vermont (SW VT) | Joshua, you're correct on the New Holland idea except they didn't kick the bales into the wagon. They were stacked, on edge, and TIGHT. The wagons were a little bit smaller than usual, and steel; with slatted floors and galvanized sides. Put them in the shed and pull a hood down over them; and then pump the heated air down through them during the night. As was said; cut in the morning, bale in the afternoon, and unload in the morning--then repeat. There were at least a couple ofthese around here. I worked at Hall Farm in No. Bennington, VT in '61, and they had this setup. Fairfields in Williamstown, MA did too. A few of the old wagons are still around.
