Subject: Re: JD 4955 powershift question

Our 4955 is the grain cart tractor, EXCELLENT application for the 15-speed, but we [and the hired help] NEVER go gear-by-gear, up or down. It's too d@mn hard on the hitch, the auger, the transmission, and the operator. Powershift transmissions [to be brief] have ALL of their Gears, ALL in mesh, ALL the time. The clutch packs inbetween various gears on the shafts will engage/disengage in certain combinations to achieve a particular gear ratio. Every time a clutch pack releases or engages, you have a small amount of wear inside the trans. Over time, the friction material from the clutch packs will foul the oil, fill the filter[s], and eventually wear out. So shift when you must, use the clutch for starts/stops, but feel free to do like the former post, and skip as many gears as you like. The trans knows how to get to the ratio you want and will modulate as needed to get there. All those start/stop "jerks" are completely unnecessary. That said, it is NOT a problem to use the PS to correct for load conditions, even during heavy tillage. It will handle this usage, but it was not designed to be bumped up/down gear-by-gear during normal accel/decel.
Sidenote: The Red/Blue Steigers have designed around this abuse by shifting up/down 2 gears at a time, unless you hold a second button down while shifting... a very intentional and sensible design decision on their part.
