Many of the towns in Illinois are proud of being on the "old" route 66. Much of the route is marked. Lots of towns have older 50's and 60's type drive-in restaurants etc along the route.

Enjoy your visit. Take your time! Many folks from Europe under estimate the distance and time it takes to see what they want to see in the US.
