Subject: RE: Tower bracing question

North Central Iowa
The Brownie towers I used to build when I worked as a millwright were X-braced, and were bolted together at the center of the X as well. Rather than smashing the centers, they had bushing welded in the centers for a 7/16 bolt to go through. They also had a horizontal brace at the bottom, just like you have at the top. It may not be necessary for strength (I don't know, I'm not an engineer), but it sure holds everything square when you're stacking them and makes for easier bolt alignment. That's pretty nice if your putting it up in two pieces, as aligning that joint when you're 50' in the air is much more difficult than when you're 10' off the ground stacking the two pieces. Brownie also makes the bottom sections heavier, depending on heighth and load to be supported. Try looking here for some ideas: http://www.go-brownie.com/stowers.htm.
