Subject: French Press

Central Kansas
We have been through the whole shabang with coffee makers. I was stationed in Germany after leaving Nam and we started with the Melitta plastic filter holder and poured hot water through. Fresh ground beans help of course...as does water without lots of minerals and iron. Went through all the expresso-type machines from $100 to $2600. Switched from a coffee carafe on a hot plate to an insulated one without bottom heat (better for sure). Ground our own (keep it out of the frig), buy it from dealers, etc.

Today....we use Community Coffee, Dark Roast (Louisiana stuff) or Eight O'Clock. Use the coarse ground or buy beans and grind them more coarse than filter coffee machines use. Put a couple teaspoons per cup into the bottom of a French Press coffee maker (a glass cylinder with a spring wound plate on a plunger rod through a solid top), pour in 10 cups of water just off the boil (a drip coffee maker can be used to make the hot water), stir the grounds and water and let it sit for 4 minutes. Push the plunger slowly down through the mix and end up with great coffee with a bit of crema on top. You can pour what you don't put in cups into an insulated carafe. Say what ya want.....THIS is coffee MON!! Give it a whirl.
