Subject: RE: PTO or Electic Motor Auger

Chebanse, IL.....

We have 2x 10x31 truck augers. Both have 10 hp 1ph motors. To me, that's the only way. We've unloaded w/pto before also. 1 guy can move the augers if he's eaten his Wheaties, otherwise 2 is safer on snow & ice. Loader works OK if auger doesn't tip up on you. That is a problem.

We use 50A range plugs for our outlets & cords. One cord is 100', the other is 50'. Both are 4ga. (I think, again, 1ph). Never are they hooked together. We use shorter if outlet is closer. If you get a 3ph motor, you can use lighter wire.

Also, I've wired an ammeter onto each auger starter box so I can make sure the auger isn't overloaded electrically. That can cause an unexpected mess if the hi-limit pops out on the motor when you're daydreaming somewhere else. I believe they both are rated @ 40A max load.
