The rod is the piston, you remove the steel ring to remove the rod, the seal thats leaking is in the barrel and is accessilble only after rod is removed. Depending on how old 2166 you have there where updates to cylinders, some have black ends and if they where not replaced a CX was suppost to be stamped at the fitting ports, check that rod isn't all scored that was a problem too.
