Princeton, In | Wonderful story Bob, heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Reminds me of my grandfather's datebook. He was a good farmer in his day and an even better man. Kept farm records and a journal in the same book, "sold 8 fat hogs today", or "plowed 5 acres today". I read through them in my 20's, about 15 years after he passed on. Still vividly remember the entry from August 17, 1932, "Lost the farm today. Bought by Prudential Insurance Company. Hope to buy it back someday." Even though I wasn't there, and had never heard him talk about it, I was 10 when he passed, I could feel some of his anguish across the years. I know that in the thirty's, about everybody "lost the farm", but this brought it home to me. I have kept those words in the back of my mind over the course of my farming career and, so far, haven't screwed up big enough at any one time that, with the good Lord's help, we haven't been able to get out from under it ;) By the way, he was able to buy the farm back and we still farm it to this day. I can guarantee that things will have to be really, really bad before that 50 acres is sold again. | |
