I have always heard to offer you hand to a dog in a closed loose fist style with the palm down. They say a open hand is confronting to a dog. Let them come to the hand and not have it close enough so it is there at him. Just what I have heard and has worked so far. He might just have been in a bad mood and wanted to nail you no matter what.
