I think that changing the angle/pitch of the blade will change the width of the bands. More pitch would make wider bands, less would make narrower bands. If it was plumb, it wouldn't advance the pipe. Sorta like cutting bolt threads.
I'm gonna make one of those!

edit: Now, if you just had a way to drive the uncut tube with a drill, think how fast you could make a couple hundred feet of protector in a few minutes, not counting the time to change blades.
