| around here they usaly know you by your first name and if they don't they know a relative. but the way i always took it was that the auctioneer is basicaly a broker on behalf of the seller trying to get a better bid. so the way i see it, its not like a cattle auction its more like a price settlement auction. the yip and yap is just the greese. but thats from a fairly narrow veiw of maybe a couple dozen auctions over my lifetime.
