Rat terriers make real nice pets. Find one with Decker blood lines and they won't be much smaller than a heeler. We have one that is about 25-30 lbs and just a solid block of muscle. He is real short haired and an excellent kid dog. I looked up once to see my two yr old daughter pry his mouth open and grab a hold of his tongue and pull for all she was worth. He didn't even so much as growl. Best part about him is that he doesn't eat near as much as a lab. One note of caution, they are pretty high energy dogs, so they need to be able to run a lot outside.
