We had a walking stick made of small rod that measured 5.5 feet. You would measure along field edge (headland) and divide it by three to get your rods(16.5 feet) If field was half mile you didn't need to do that side, as most around here are square sections divided into quarters. If not, away you go. Got our exercise. Not many wheels around here in the 70's, 80's. You would have the top part in your hand and rotate it along side of you as you walked. I couldn't find a pic, so drew a stick figure. Quarter to three eighths rod welded up. You could whip it around and walk a good clip after using it awhile.

edit: get you rods along two sides and multiply them together and divide by 160 to get your acres or go around it and divide by square feet.
