Too close to Raleigh, NC | That way the primer is mixed into the top layer of the POR-15. Spray the POR-15, let it start to tack up, then spray a LIGHT coat of whatever primer. The primer will "soak" into the POR-15 and provide an adhesion layer for topcoats. If you let the POR-15 dry it becomes much more difficult to get a primer or topcoat to stick it because of lack of porosity when dry. Self-etching primers do not do well on top of POR-15 because they have nothing to etch into. Catalyzed enamels are OK but they may react to the POR-15 and fisheye so you have to play around and see what is compatible. We tend to use basic red oxide primer if we are planning to color over the POR-15.
Of course, POR has their own topcoats that they want to sell you. It has been a while since I sprayed anything so I do not know if they have newer formulations out now that are more topcoat friendly.
One note of caution - make sure you clean the gun and cup as soon as you stop spraying - and use their thinner to do it. A load of POR-15 dried in a spray gun = a new gun. | |
