SE PA | Matt,
I have found out that this ground is in Dorset, along rte 307. I forget what soil type he said, but I do remember it was a low OM content, poor water infiltration, and crusts easily. Sounds to me like he should just forget the whole deal. This buddy of mine thinks this is a diamond in the rough, but I keep telling him if it was so great, somebody else would already have it...... Either way, I appreciate all the info, cause it's 10 times more than what I knew already.
Oh, FWIW, he went to the NRCS today, talked to somebody about the sod busting deal, and it would be OK to farm, so that's not an issue...... But here's the really (almost) funny part..... this fellow in the office told him the ground would do 180bu corn, and 50 bu beans..... So, according to him, this ground is above the national average for corn production! Yea, right.
Thanks,
