I think it just depends on the situation. Some peopel shred it to the ground no matter what. Some of the Deere heads can leave a good long stalk with the cast rolls. If you have to run lower to get the ears, then do it. That is most important at the time. If it is standing perfect with ears high, then take advantage of that. Different areas have different conditions. I do run mine pretty low for the same reason as you. There are those dangling ears I want to save. (btw cih knife rolls).
