Palestine Illinois | Dad grew some canning pumpkins when I was in grade school. They were definatly not Jack-O-lanterns, they were a large thick walled pumpkin. They were also a dull color.
To harvest they had a couple of Super M's rigged to windrow them. I do not rember the specifics, but they had a angled roller mounted on the back and they were fashioned to drive in reverse. They had two seats, two steering wheels. There was some kind of conveyor that drove through the field that loaded dump wagons. ( and the dump wagons were pulled by 2+2's, the first time I had ever saw such a machine)
The bad part is that they had them all windrowed, then decided that they had enough. He got paid but had windrows of pumpkins on about 40 acres. I remember a few choice words from the guy that cut the beans the next year, a lot of pumpkins to roll out of the way.
