Dutch, That looks just like what I have been doing. I have tried everything from full cover to drilling everyother middle. Each has their own specific advantages and disadvantages. I have been doing exactly what you are doing with a cover crop for 4 years on most of my acres. I have not plowed any of this ground since 2003 when I had milo and sesame after it was hailed out. Will try some strip till this year.
I don't have a problem with root knot nematodes. Do you deep break for them or do you use temik??
