Subject: fertilizer and soybeans

Waterloo, N.Y.
should i not apply my fertilizer through my ih 5100 drill as Penn st. recommends? i understand now that the seed is sensitive to salt and penn state issued a blanket statement of "Do NOT drill fertilizer with the seed or use “pop-up” fertilizer". I have read in some other literature that one should be aware of the dangers when applying fertilizer through the drill but did say there was insufficient data to back up the statement of stand loss due to fertilizer. well i did not know this and planted 40 acres of soybeans applying fertilizer through the drill. I did not notice any stand loss compared to other areas where i pulled the fertilizer tubes so the fertilizer would not be in close contact with the seed in the double disk openers. In the future like Penn st. says should i avoid applying fertilizer through the drill when planting soybeans? at this point of my operation dry fertilizer through the drill is the most efficient form of application for me.
