Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND
Before converting to no till in 94, used to plow with a Steiger Cougar KR 1225 and an 8-18 Melrow plow. Would plow fields in a square pattern, pick up the plow at the headlands, turn 90 degrees and drop the plow, when you got to the end of the headlands, you lifted the plow turned 90 degrees down the row and dropped the plow.
When the field was finished, you plowed out the 20 ft wide strips in the 4 corners, lifting the rear of the plow to close the dead furrow on the last pass. Worked great, no lost time or packed headlands from driving the headlands with the plow up, and the end result was a field as smooth as field cultivated. Not such a bad job with the 8-18 plow and 4 wd tractor, atleast you could see you had made progress on a 160 acre field after a few hours.
Not nearly as frustrating as earlier years with a 50 hp tractor and 4 bottom plow where you could still clearly see the first pass plowed in the morning at the end of the day :-(
