Aberdeen MS | Removal of Major Nutrients by Corn and Soybeans
Crop and Component N P2O5 K2O
- - - - lb./bu - - - -
Corn Grain 1.0 0.35 0.25
Corn Stover 0.5 0.25 1.05
Soybean Grain 4.2 0.9 1.5
Soybean Stover1.3 0.3 0.9
The above is from the U of MN.
IMO, a loss of great potential is evident by relying on "left over" nutrients from a corn crop to feed a bean crop the next year. A lot of emphasis is on "mining the soil" and always relating it to replacing nutrients after corn.
It's almost a wash when looking at 150 corn and 50 beans on P205.
Would anyone plant second year corn going off of the "left overs" from the previous year??? How absurd would be the common response. Crunch the numbers.
