They are notorious for junk settling in the #6 sleeve causing the deck to erode. It's usually in the back. Did you keep the coolant properly treated and keep the water filter changed? They can be re-decked but that's a fairly popular engine and blocks are very popular usually cheaper than machine work. The problem is the one you buy might have the same issue.

I hope this isn't your problem but just hold that thought in the back of your mind because it's often over looked. Usually when this is the problem your getting coolant into the oil too, but if there's enough junk in the back of the cooling chamber it could seal it off.
