SE MN Still in Pothole Country
We farm right on top of a lateral glacial morraine in SE MN. Too the west of us is priairie pot hole country. To the east surface water mostly runs somewhere. We farm some land that is tiled every 60 feet and some with the old random tile systems yet to be updated. From Webster, Clarion, Nicollet to Dundas to a few acres of sand. Mostly clay loam. On our ground there is minimal net loss of soil from the farm but if you are not careful a lot of rearranging on the farm. Fertilizer is too expensive to let wash down the hill to the low with an eight inch rain like one farm got this June 8. That being said we own a moldboard plow, a DMI disk ripper, and an old Chisel plow. Chisel plow mostly used after big tiling jobs. Take off center tooth and put on twists that throw dirt in to the center. Does a nice job after a tile plow. In case you do not know what Dundas soil is lets just say it will hold more water than anything if you can get it into the soil and don't work it too death and squeeze all the air out. Actually are few acres of that are tiled every 50 feet.
