Subject: RE: A Guide to Genetically Modified Alfalfa

Little River, TX
Tuesday I heard a Texas Weed Expert talk about the roundup resistant trait in cotton, beans, and corn.
There is problem with the RR trait, in that it increases the spread roundup resistance. As I under stood the man, every weed will germinate close to 100 seeds per sq ft. The seedlings will naturally dye back to one or so weeds per sq ft. Using roundup we select which plant will survive and it will be resistant to round up. It may only be one or two in an entire field the first year. The second year the seedlings from the selected plant will germinate and there will be 5 to 10 times more resistant seedlings survive. Now you have one or two weeds per acre. by the third to the fifth year the field is covered with resistant weeds,
Lesson learned, do not rely fully on roundup but continue to use a pre emerge or a PPI herbicide along with the roundup.
