Columbia City, Indiana | I'd be very wary of buying bottle calves out of the sale barn unless you can get them REALLY cheap. You would be better off going to a local dairy that looks like they know what they're doing and buying calves direct. Make sure to ask about their method of making sure the calves get their colostrum, because this is CRITICAL. If a calf doesn't get enough colostrum, they WILL die, but I've had them live as long as 2-3 weeks and appear fine, then the first bug they catch will kill them. In a matter of 24 hours they can go from jumping around and bawling to be fed to being on the ground and unable to get up. I'd rather buy the calves from a dairy, even if you have to pay considerably more for them. Good luck. | |
