I worked for a vet for several years and there is no pain involved. When I helped him he used sodium pentabarb I think and when it is in the vein like it should be as soon as it is injected the animal drops before you can get the needle out. That is it and it is over. Their heart may beat for a few more seconds but they are out. It is the best way to do it.
