I've been advised repeatedly by third-generation ranchers to not jump into the deep end of the pool with cattle. It is best to start out small and suffer a small wreck, than to jump into a situation with 100's of head and have a huge wreck that ends your aspirations of being in the cattle business, possibly forever.
You're likely going to have problems (everyone starting with animals has some sort of problem), and you're going to learn some lessons the hard way the first time you have even two cows. Might as well learn the lessons when you're staying small enough to get out with a survivable loss if things go really wrong. The old timers advised to get through a couple of years with a smaller herd before ramping up and taking on a large amount of risk. |
