North Mo. | Yes Jim what you are doing is call low stress weaning. If you could move the cows or calves away after 2 to 4 days it would be even better, less stress. But if unable so be it. What you are doing is better than shuting calves in a dry lot and expecting them to eat a dry feed for the first time.
On the weaning wt. heavier milking cows just take more feed either more quality grass or something. My cows are always pushed to the limit notice some pics. a few threads back. We always have quite a few fall outs but there is always a hopefully more efficent heifers to take the hard doing cows place.
Yes we do not sell calves off cows for that reason. We like to harvest more grass with our cattle and are more interested in pounds per acre.
That said 600 # calves off stright Herefords is a pretty good figure. Ben | |
