North Central Kansas | Time to bring the cows home. Neighbors had there bull get in my pasture a while back. They called this week and offered to set up their Wilson wheel corral for me to catch my cows and they could get their bull. I thought that was pretty good deal. Sure beats loading panels. Anyway I went up this morning and cubed the cows to catch them. All but two calves went in. I thought no big deal I'll just go home and get the trailer and 4 wheeler and come back and leave the 2 calves next to the pen. When I get back the neighbors had showed up and had their bull loaded. One calf is by the pen. I asked them where the other calf was and they said when they got there that it was standing on the far hill. Went ahead and loaded my trailer and took fourwheeler to get calf. Wasn't anywhere to be found. Drove whole pasture and could not see him. No trees so it should have been a no brainer. Neighbors and I couldn't believe that the calf would have just disappeared. I took my load home and came back to look for the calf. I went back to the pond and drove around the edge and the calf (600#) was hiding in the slew. I got it up with the 4 wheeler but it crossed the ditch and layed back down in some heavy grass to hide. Calf looks healthy and everything looks good. I have seen deer do this but never cattle.
After I got those hauled I decided I would go set up the other two pastures so I could catch them in the morning. Guy I cut with has a wheel corrall too and he told me I could use it. So I set it up and thought I would cube those cows so they could get used to the pen. Problem was only half of them came. The other half were out. So I got them in and caught all but one pair and hauled them. I guess that means less work for the morning. Hope that pasture comes in better. The wheel corrals are nice but you almost need two people to crowd the cows in.
