to nitrate poisoning is my only guess. I don't think in all my years that we've had a cow die from that, but I don't know what else it could be. It was a fall cow with a 2 month old calf on her on pasture and a patch of volunteer oats that had pretty much been picked into the ground before it froze the last two nights. We've always been careful about not letting them graze milo, sudan, or cane stubble the first week after the first freeze, but I never would have guessed oats. Who knows, it could be something totally different. I don't know if it makes any difference that we've had over 6" rain in October.
