Subject: Re: any camelina growers on here?

We raised cameina a year ago, live in Eastern Montana. Seeded around March 10th , good stand, considering i havent seen any other camelina crops, but the president of great plains (the camelina company in montana) said it looked excellent for the few crops in our area. We seeded at around 3 pounds an acre broadcasted with a rotary harrow. Overall the crop came up good and performed well considering we applied 0 fertilizer to ground that had been continuous dryland wheat for the past 5 years. The thing that screwed up the whole crop was harvesting. The seed was so small, even with the screens we applied to the seives of our 9600 we were unable to get a clean sample, or even a complete sample, because there was alot that came out of the back of the combine. We tried all kinds of settings, and could never go any faster than about 1.5 miles per hour or it would run out the back. Great Plains said to let the stems of the crop dry out past being green because sometimes it can hamper the flow like any raggy weeds would, but that didnt help either. A positive thing about the crop is that it competed well with weeds other than cheat grass, and the following wheat crop didnt show any tan spot. We were unable to decide any yield gain from rotating with camelina due to a severe drought this year. If there is anyone who can tell us how to get a clean sample and get the whole crop in the combine I would love to know how!!!!
